WASHINGTON – John Mathews, of Universal Toyota in San Antonio, has witnessed the day that auto industry executives in Detroit said never would come.

'We are seeing people who are driving $40,000 Suburbans trading them in on $15,000 Corollas,' said Mathews, who manages a dealership in a state where big trucks and sport utility vehicles rule the roads. 'The last 30 days have been unlike anything I've ever seen in the automotive industry.'"

It's about time we all started worrying about fuel consumption. I remember working in Europe 12 years ago and paying more for gasoline back then than we do now in the US. The taxes on gas in Europe were (and I imagine, still are) really steep. I guess it should be no surprise then that most of the top fuel economy vehicles (non-hybrid) come from Europe. Let's see where we are in a years time...perhaps you'll be able to buy a used Suburban that sold new for $40,000+ for $20,000 or less.
